Surveillance Accountability
Require cybersecurity standards, data deletion, and transparency for all automated surveillance systems deployed by government.
The Problem
Automated surveillance cameras — license plate readers, AI tracking cameras, and facial recognition systems — are being deployed across Georgia with no law governing how the data is secured, how long it is kept, or who can access it. The cameras are owned by private companies, not Georgia communities, and have been found to have catastrophic cybersecurity vulnerabilities that U.S. senators have formally asked the FTC to investigate.
The Solution
- Require mandatory cybersecurity certification for all surveillance vendors before contracting with Georgia agencies
- Mandate independent annual penetration testing of all deployed systems
- Require automatic deletion of surveillance data within 30 days
- Prohibit sharing data with federal immigration agencies without a court order
- Create meaningful criminal and civil penalties for officers who misuse surveillance systems and a private right of action for affected citizens
Why It Matters
Every Georgian who drives, walks, or shops in public is already in these databases. Without accountability legislation, that data is accessible to hackers, stalkers with badges, and private companies with no accountability.
Talking Points
- Automated license plate readers and facial recognition cameras are tracking every Georgian with no legal safeguards.
- U.S. Senators have formally asked the FTC to investigate critical cybersecurity vulnerabilities in these systems.
- Without a deletion mandate, surveillance data can be stored indefinitely and sold or shared without your knowledge.
- Georgia communities deserve to know who owns and controls the cameras watching their streets — and to have recourse when that data is misused.
- This is a bipartisan issue: conservatives value privacy from government overreach; progressives value civil liberties. Both have reason to act.
